Our boys did us proud as they finished 6th at the AA Provincial Championships. The team played very well in the playoff round, and narrowly lost in the quarter-finals. The team bounced back with a good win to put them into the 'Top 6'. Our league is extremely competitive as the 3 Fraser Valley teams finished 1,3, and 6. Mark Vanderwal made the 2nd all-star team and Justin Thiessen received an honourable mention! Great Season!

The Senior Boys had another great weekend, finishing 2nd at the Vancouver Island University Tournament. The Knights had a great semi-final win over GP Vanier, before falling to Richmond Christian in the final. Mark and Jon received all-star awards. Next up is a league match vs. DWP on Wednesday October 14, at 6:30 pm.

The Knights opened league play last week by hosting FVAA and Langley Christian. The boys took control of the match against FVAA quickly and won easily. The match against LC proved to be more exciting as there was a good crowd on hand to watch this back and forth affair. The match went the full 5 sets with the Knights coming out on the short end, but there is great reason to have strong expectations for this year's team.

MEI Tournament Update: The Knights participated in the 30 team tournament on Sept. 25 & 26. There were many great matches and the team looked to be a cohesive unit in much of their play. The boys went 4-0 in winning their pool, but fell to Semiahmoo in the playoff round. Overall, a great weekend!

The Knights hosted a 12 team tournament over the weekend and finished in second place. The team marched through pool play and the playoffs until the semi-finals. Credo Christian played inspired to push the match to three sets, but our boys prevailed. They met Langley Christian in the final, whom they have split matches with this season, and it was a close affair as our boys dropped the first set, won the second, but came up a few points short in the third. Dan Vaags and Josh Berger picked up All-Star awards for their fine play. The boys are in action Thursday, November 5 when they host a first-round playoff game.

Last night saw the Junior Boys push their league record to 2-0 with a 5 set win over MEI.

Update #1
Our Junior Boys' team is blessed with a lot of depth and the Grade 9's have been working hard to adjust to the pace and intensity of high school athletics. The coaches have been impressed with their team's work ethic, rapid improvement and focus on team play. The boys captured first place last weekend at the Douglas College Tournament. The Junior Boys will be hosting their Knights Invitational on October 30 & 31. Come on out and watch!

November 13, 2009
The Junior Girls finished off the regular league season in second place behind Yale in the Abby-Mission East division.  Their first playoff match was at home against Bateman, and the girls powered their way to a 3-0 victory.  The next two days saw the girls play in the Christian School's tournament at Pacific Academy.  Their pool play consisted of two wins against MEI B and Richmond Christian, and a loss to Fraser Valley Christian (the eventual champs).  In the first playoff match, they played well and beat a tough White Rock Christian Academy team, but fell to Langley Christian in the quarterfinal match.

Tuesday, November 10 had the girls play at MEI in a much anticipated semi-final match.  MEI was undefeated in West division league play, and looked really strong in building up a 2-0 lead in the match.  However, the girls fought back and won the next two, pushing the match to five games.  With the fans and bench screaming and cheering, the girls got behind early and were down 12-6 at one point.  However, they persevered and took the set 17-15 and won the match!  It was a magical moment that nobody will forget.  The win put the Knights into the gold medal match, thus ensuring finally a Fraser Valley berth.  In the gold medal game, the girls kept the pedal to the metal, and finally overcame a tough Yale squad 3-1, winning the Abby-Mission Championships for the first time ever (as far as the coaches can remember, anyways).  A big congratulations must go out to the lady Knights for their much improved play, tenacity, and historic result in league play.  We look forward to playing in the Fraser Valley's next week!

The girls improved their league record to 2-0 after defeating Heritage Park on Oct. 7.  Ashley Ridder had a strong match with 6 Kills and 2 Blocks.  The girls' next opponent was Yale, and with a disappointing effort the girls moved to 2-1 in league play.  Jordyn Visser led the way with 10 kills and strong passing in a losing effort.  Two days later the girls got back on the winning side with a victory over Hatzic.  Erica Vanderwal had her best match of the year, providing the team with 10 kills and strong serving.  With a 3-1 league record, the girls began playing the same teams for the second time.  A win at Abby Collegiate pushed their league record up to 4-1, with Ashley Ridder leading the way with 9 kills.  Sarah Van Woerden was able to provide good defence and strong passing.  October 26 saw the girls have a chance to take on Yale once again.  Despite a much closer result, the girls lost in 5 to Yale.  Whitney Gaskell, Jordyn Visser, and Chanelle Steenkamp combined for an amazing 36 kills, but unfortunately the girls could not get it done on the defensive side of the ball.  The next day the girls traveled to Heritage Park, and with another victory the girls moved solidly into second place in the Abby Mission East division with a 5-2 record.  Danica Kampman had a strong match versus Heritage Park, with both her passing and her 6 kills.

Week #4 saw the junior girls open league play, as Abby Collegiate visited on Thursday, Oct. 1.  The girls played well in front of a home crowd.  Jennifer Ridder served for 19 points, as the girls came out on top with a 3-0 win.  On Saturday, Oct. 3, the girls played in the Riverside Tournament.  Like the previous tournaments, the girls had the opportunity to play good exciting teams.  Twice the girls lined up against Penticton (one of the top teams in the province), and despite losing, were able to further develop their blocking and attack coverage skills.  They also played one of the top AA schools in St. Patricks, and came away with a split.  The fourth match was a 2-0 win over cross town rival WJ Mouat.  The girls finished in a tie for 5th place.  Leading the way for the Knights in the tournament was Jordyn Visser, who led the team in blocks, digs, and passing, and also contributed 13 kills on the offense.  Whitney Gaskell chipped in with 11 kills, while Hailey McGrail added 7 kills of her own.

September 28, 2009
The Junior Girls Volleyball team began their season with a tournament in Seaquam.  They played five matches, where they rotated all the players through the lineup.  Renee Bomhof won the all-star award for her hustle and enthusiasm.

The second tournament saw them attend the TWU Spartans tournament in Langley.  In pool play, they lost to Riverside (the eventual winners), had a split against Kitsilano, and beat Langley Secondary.  They finished third, and in the first playoff crossover match took on Brookswood (2nd place finishers in their pool).  This match marked the first time a starting lineup was used, and the girls won a nailbiter 2-1.  This set them up with Semiahmoo (#1 in their pool).  The girls played with great energy, and beat them in two close games.  The quarter-final match had the Knights up against a tough West Point Grey team, and once again the girls won a close one in three (15-12 in the third game).  By the time the girls reached the semi-final match, they were a tired group, with several still feeling the effects of illnesses.  Jennifer Ridder continued to set well despite being quite sick, with Sarah Van Woerden filling in admirably to give Jenn some rest during the Semiahmoo match.  The Knights were up against a tough team from the Okanagan (Kalamalka) in the semi-final.  Their opposition also looked tired, but Kalamalka prevailed and beat the Knights 25-22 and 25-23.  The loss left the girls playing for third against Pacific Academy.  With a tired and sick team, everybody got to play a little, and the girls settled for a fourth place finish, which was the best ever result for a Abbotsford Christian junior girls team.  Chanelle Steenkamp led the Knights in Kills (27), Blocks (10), and hustle to have the honour of being on the tournament all-star team.  Neena de Ruiter had a strong tournament with her defense, and Courtney Verbeek got her first taste at the libero position, and performed admirably.
