2009/10 Senior Boys BasketballBack Row L-R: Manager - Doug, Ben, Mark, Justin, Curtis, Liam, coach Stuart
Front Row L-R: Coach Keith, Brad, Riley Updates:Feb 11On the weekend of February 4-6, the boys played at the SJB tournament. The boys played well and had two easy wins over Vernon Christian and SJB. In the final the Knights played St. Pats from Vancouver. It was our first poorly played game in a long time as we lost by 20 points. The team struggled with shooting and making smart plays on the floor. From there the guys headed to the Fraser Valley playoffs. We opened against Mission and had one of our poorest shooting games of the year in a 20 point loss. That dropped us into an elimination game against Hope. We played well, lead the entire game until the last 3 minutes when Hope had a 9-0 run to take a 5 point lead which we could not overcome. The loss ended our season. February 3, 2010 The Senior Boys finished league play with games against Abby Traditional on Jan 27 and a double header against DW Poppy (Langley) on Jan 28 and Feb 2. The Knights rolled away with 20 point wins in all three games. Mark was tremendous against Abby Traditional with 44 points on 55% shooting. Curtis had a big game on Feb 2 against DW Poppy shooting 6/6 in the first half. The three wins put the boys in 2nd place in league play and set them in the middle of the pack for the Fraser Valley Playoffs on Feb 10-13. January 23, 2010 The Senior Boys continued league play with a game at GW Graham on January 20th. The game was close in the first half, but Graham outscored the Knights 24-10 in the third quarter on their way to a 77-60 win. It was a rather flat effort by the boys. However, they rebounded with a good effort on Thursday as they defeated Aldergrove 92-66. Mark had two big dunks in the win, and the boys used full court pressure throughout the game for the first time this season. January 18, 2010 The Senior Boys carried their winning ways from the tournament into league play. The boys hosted Hope on Tuesday, Jan 12. It was a tight contest, but the boys never trailed as they won 63-55. The win moved the boys into a a first place tie in the league. Brad had an outstanding game with 19 points and 13 rebounds. On Thursday the boys played Abby Traditional. The boys took control early and never trailed in a 91-61 win. It was the highest scoring output for the team this year. Brad continued his fine play with another "double double" of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Mark led the team in scoring with 25 points, including a terrific stretch dunk. January 11, 2010 The Senior Boys opened 2010 playing at the Christian Schools Tournament. The boys opened with a 70-67 victory over Regent Christian. Trailing 67-63 with two minutes to play, the boys turned on the defensive pressure, holding Regent from a taking a single shot in the last two minutes. This keyed a 7-0 run for the boys on the way to victory. Mark Vanderwal was the player of the game. In the second game the boys played Unity Christian. It was a revenge game for the team since they had lost to Unity earlier in the season. The guys took an early 10 point lead and never looked back in a 62-51 victory. Once again the boys played outstanding defence. Justin Thiessen was the player of the game. The win moved the boys into the championship game against Langley Christian. The boys jumped out to a 14-2 start and never trailed in the game. Langely closed the lead to 4 points on a number of occasions, but big hoops by Curtis Van Dorp down the stretch helped put the game away as the boys won 60-51 to capture the championship. It was the first time since 1988 that our Senior Boys have won the tournament. Mark Vanderwal was named the tournament MVP. December 18, 2009 On Thursday, Dec 17 the boys played their third league game of the season. After the big win over GWG, the boys were a little flat. They had a couple of spurts that allowed them to forge a 20 point lead in the 3rd quarter. The boys ended up winning by 14 points to make their league record 2-1 at the Christmas break. December 16, 2009 The senior boys returned to league action on Dec 15. They hosted GW Graham, the top team in the league. The Knights played a terrific game that came down to the last shot. With the 5 seconds to go in the game and trailing by one point, Justin Thiessen hit a 3 point shot to give the Knights a 68-66 win. December 15, 2009 On December 11 the boys took on Fraser Heights from Surrey. This was a terrific game. Each team took turns leading and the game came down to the final possession. Fraser Heights tied the game at 57 with a 3 point shot and then after we turned the ball over (rats), they attacked the basket and drew a foul with 1 second left. They converted one of the free throws to win 58-57. Mark had a dominate game with 32 points and 7 rebounds while Brad Vaandrager had 14 rebounds in his best game of the year. On Saturday the boys played Rick Hansen. This was another close game. We led 62-61 in the 4th quarter, but our conditioning isn't the best right now and we ran out of gas late in the game to fall 83-76. Mark had 26 points while Brad had 10 points and 15 rebounds. December 11, 2009 The Senior boys opened league play on December 8th at Hope. With only one practice under their belts, the boys struggled with their shooting in a 64-49 loss. Mark Vanderwal had a thundering dunk early in the game, but that was about it for highlights. On December 10 the boys opened play in the Abbotsford Police Tournament against Abby Collegiate. Abby opened up an 8 - 0 lead, but then Wes DeWaal came on and went 6/8 from the floor to lead us to a 38-31 half time lead. The good play continued in the second half as Mark made some key hoops. He finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds in our opening round win, 78-70. November 30, 2009 The Senior Boys opened their season at the Sardis Tournament. The boys were a little unsettled since they went in with no practices because the boys have all been playing volleyball. The rust was deep as the shooting clanged and dribbling was wonky, but we had a lot of fun. We lost to Chilliwack by 10 pts, (after getting down 19-2 to start the game), we lost to Unity Christian by 10 pts (after shooting 17%), and we beat Agassiz by 10 pts. Curtis Van Dorp played well the whole weekend and the was the player of the game in the Agassiz win.

2009/10 Junior Boys BasketballBack Row L-R: coach Van Dyk, Josh, Riley, Dan, Trevor, Wesley, Tylan, coach Ridder
Front Row L-R: Curtis, Brayden, Scott, Matt, Chris, Landon Updates:February 23, 2010It was a thrilling week for the junior knights as they came within one point of going to the provincials. Our team was seeded #9 in the FV tournament and began the week with a 15 point win over RE Mountain (langely), in their second game the Knights faced Delview (Delta #1) and raced to a lead in the first half. The game got tight in the second half and the Knights eventually prevailed in OT - some strong play in the fourth by Brayden and in OT by Tylan led to the win. This advanced the team to the final 8 tournament in Pitt Meadows. The Knights were up against Tamanawis (#1 seed) and had a tough match up with their size. The Knights battled hard anyway, and won the second half, dropping a 68-50 decision. The Knights now had a tough road in this double knock-out tourny. Next up was Walnut Grove the #5 seed; it was another tight contest and Wesley deWaal stepped up to hit a shot at the buzzer for a 72-71 win. Now the boys were up against #3 seed Heritage Woods (Coquitlam) for the chance to get to the 3rd/4th place game. The Knights played awesome defense and attacked the hoop hard getting HW in foul trouble - the Knights built a lead in the second half and then hung on for a 2 point win. The junior boys then had to play again that night (6th game in 6 days) agains our friends from Mouat. We had dropped two games to Mouat earlier in the year, by 15 and 10 points. After getting down 14-4 the team switched to a zone D and really settled in and made it a 3 point game by haltime. The Knights finally tied the game in the last minute, but Mouat scored to go up by 2 with 20 seconds to play. We were fouled and only made one of two, so we had to foul. We stole an inbounds play with 5 seconds to go but didn't get off a good shot, dropping the contest 39-38. Dan Vaags was named to the all-star team, and Brayden Kampman had an outstanding week as well. An awesome season for the team as they went 25-9 and advanced further than any junior team from ACS since 1994!! February 17, 2010 The boys played awesome in the first half last night against Delview and persevered in the second - it was a thrilling game in a hostile environment, the Knights were seeded #9 and Delview #8 and it ended up a pretty even game as the ACS Knights won in overtime. Brayden K scored 6 in the fourth and Ty Postma scored 6 in overtime. We have advanced to the final 8 (out of 70 teams in the valley) and are up against #1 on Thursday. February 15, 2010 ACS KNIGHTS knock off Yale in playoff action Friday! The Junior Boys played their most complete game of the season in defeating Yale to finish 3rd in league playoffs. The Knights had lost twice to Yale this season, but made some adjustments to their defense and came with a strong focus. The team opened up a 16-2 lead and never looked back in winning by 20. Many players did well in their defensive roles and the team shot well with many players contributing to the scoring! The Knights are seeded #9 in the valley and are hoping to play their way into the Fraser Valley Tournament. Qualifying starts Monday @ Delview at 6:00pm and Tuesday at Delview at 7:30pm. February 5, 2010 The Knights came out strong on Wednesday an shut down Abby Collegiate holding them to 15 first half points. Six players scored 6 or more points with no one scoring more than 12. It was a great team win with contributions from everyone. The #3 Knights now face #2 Mouat on Monday night (Feb. 8) at 745 at Yale. January 18, 2010 The Knights had a fine weekend as they captured 1st place at the MEI Invitational. The team opened against Robert Bateman and shot the ball well, hitting 7 three's and winning comfortably. In their second game they faced Kelowna Secondary. The Knights used their press effectively and shut down Kelowna's big man, in another convincing win. The Knights started strong against MEI and raced out to a 24-10 at the end of the first quarter. The offense sputtered in the second and third, and MEI closed to withing three; but the Knights held MEI to 3 fourth quarter points and won 54-42. Tylan Postma was named tournament MVP and Dan Vaags made the all-star team. Wesley de Waal and Josh Berger hit some timely outside shots and Brayden was effective in the paint and on the press. January 12, 2010 The boys got back into action after the Christmas break with a league win over Rick Hansen on Jan. 6. The defense looked great as everyone worked hard and the team won 53-34. On Monday the boys faced Yale, the top ranked team in the league, and battled hard in the first half. We lead early and were tied at the half. We were a step slow in the second half and Yale pulled away hitting three 3's in the 4th to win 57-45. Next up: the team hosts Abby Traditional Wed. at 6:15, and play in the MEI tourny on Friday VS Bateman @ 6pm; Saturday VS Kelowna @ 10:30 and VS MEI @ 4:30. December 18, 2009 The Knights went 3-0 this week and life has been busy playing 6 games in a 7 day stretch. The team beat Abby Collegiate and Sardis convincingly in league play and then beat Maple Ridge on Thursday. Highlights were: Josh Berger's three 3's against MR, and Riley's post moves; Brayden's 20 points and Landon's 3's versus Sardis; and Dan's 23 points against Abby Collegiate. The team is 6-3 overall (3-1 league) heading into the break and in need of some rest. December 15, 2009 The Knights went 2-1 at the Yale Tournament on the weekend; dropping their opener to Yale, but bouncing back to beat Pinetree in a close one and then Chilliwack to finish second in this round robin affair. Dan Vaags and Brayden Kampman had excellent tournaments with Brayden making the all-star team. On Monday night the Knights hosted Abby Collegiate in league play. The team was ahead 13-10 after the first quarter and then got their full-court game working effectively to build a 37-20 lead at the half and cruise to a 72-37 victory. All 11 players dressed found the scoresheet. Big Dan hit all his free throws and finished with 23 points. The team is 2-1 in league play and 4-3 overall. December 10, 2009: The team took on WJ Mouat last night in league play. Mouat is huge and we are not; but the boys fought well. After an early deficit of 20-5 - the boys stormed back and briefly led 25-22. We gave them a good battle the rest of the way, but we missed 25 free throws and Mouat pulled away in the fourth by hitting some timely three's. Final score was 74-63. Tylan led the way with 22 points, followed by Brayden with 12, and Chris with 10. December 7, 2009 Well, it sure looks like the guys have only had a few practices. The boys had many good looks at the hoop in their exhibition game vs. Southridge but could not get much to drop. The game was even throughout, but some missed rebounds and shots did them in in the fourth quarter. The final score was 57-52. No one stepped up for a pop this game. Coaches say that the boys need lots of gym time to find some touch. December 3, 2009 After only two practices, the Junior Boys opened up league play on December 2 in Chilliwack. After a slow start, the Knights effectively ran their full-court zone to dictate the pace of the game. The team made large runs in the second and third quarter on their way to a 77-40 win. Everyone saw lots of floor time; guards penetrated well and big guys cleaned up the boards. Josiah Knox stepped up and took the first charge of the year! Dan Vaags led the scoring with 18 points and 6 other boys had 6 or more points in a balanced attack. The team plays tonight at 6:30 as they host Southridge.
