Cross Country
Grade 4 and 5 students have the opportunity to become involved in an extracurricular sport and become part of the Cross Country Team. The focus of this sport is to be introduced to longer distance running, to learn to set goals for themselves, and enjoy being on a team. Practices are held during lunch or recess breaks and focus on learning skills such as starting a race, pacing, setting realistic goals, and trying to improve on one’s time. Emphasis is placed on participation, enjoying God’s creation, and doing your best.
The cross country team participates in a series of 4 races hosted by the Valley Royals Track and Field Club called the LaFarge Grand Prix Cross Country Series. Students from grades 4-8 compete against their grade peers from participating schools across the city at Clearbrook Park. The distance is 1.7km.
The cross country team also participates in the CESS Cross Country race event usually held at Bear Creek park. Students from Christian Schools in the area participate against their grade level peers in one race about 1.8km in distance.
Students who participate feel a sense of accomplishment and are given a ‘taste’ of the joy of running. It is wonderful to cheer each other on and work hard toward a goal!
Track & Field
Track and Field is one of the highlights for the students in grade 4 and 5 at the Elementary Campus.
The students begin exploring and practicing their track and field skills in mid-April and anticipate performing at the two meets that they attend. The first meet is at Rotary Stadium where students compete against their school peers on teams made from the entire grade 4 to 7 student body. The second meet is held in early June when the students of ACES compete against other Christian Schools in the Lower Mainland. Whether they are running on the track, high jumping, or throwing a softball, each and every student participates in this inclusive athletic program.
