Mayor helps ACS raise funds at its annual Gala

The Hon. Bruce Banman and ACS Executive Director Julius Siebenga pose for a photo togetherOn February 10 2012, Abbotsford Christian School hosted its 3rd annual Gala under the guise of a “Spy Academy” theme.  Our hilarious host, entertainer Austin Powers (Gery Schubert), led the guests in raising $17,000 for the school and specifically it’s Special Education Department. Not only did people raise money for ACS, but they were also entertained throughout the evening.  Joining in on the fun for the evening was Abbotsford’s mayor, the Hon. Bruce Banman.  Bruce did not disappoint as he was not only asked to join Pavarotti on stage for a part with the Three Tenors (along with Executive Director Julius Siebenga), but he also gave the guests a special treat for the evening with the singing of “Dream the Impossible Dream” from the musical Man of LaMantra.  His song raised $1000.00 alone and was greeted by a standing ovation.  Many of the esteemed guests were indeed an important part of the evening as a fair number of them were brought on stage for different acts, as ultimately everyone was there to raise funds for the school.

Another important moment of the evening came when the guests were treated to a special presentation from Monique Weir (current parent at ACS), who shared with people her journey as a parent of a son who has Autism, and how the school has walked alongside her in this journey.  Her family started at ACS when her son entered grade 3 - he is now in grade 9.  ACS’ Special Education Program is outstanding, one to be proud of, and it was highlighted to major donors in the evening to emphasize the wonderful ways that Special Education students enrich the lives of our community!

Graduates of ACS go on to play important roles in our city and our communities.  We prepare them for this through engaging our children in the culture in which we find ourselves and educate them for 21st century citizenship. The Gala was a tremendous way of bringing members of our community to laugh, to celebrate, and to support the school.  We look forward to how the money raised can make a difference in the lives of our children.
